Where in Martinez? Yoga Photo Contest Week 6: A little different

This week the prize changes and take a peek at the bottom for a preview of future contest weeks!

Week 6 contest rules: If you deliver your entry in person, you are guaranteed a prize! Figure out where this picture was taken and show up there Friday, June 6th at around 5:10pm for a free yoga class. Think you know? Post your answer in the comments below and show up anyway. No idea? Keep reading. (Or you can show up at our studio at 5pm and walk over with us!)

Maybe I should explain...

As a result of taking all of these pictures, we started our "First Friday Free" class in May at the East Bay Regional Shoreline. (It was going to be Waterfront Park, but we went across the street because it was shadier and easier to see our sign.)

As we've wandered around town taking these pictures, we learned that yoga out in the real world, although just as transforming as in a studio, is a VERY different experience. For beginners it can be a nice, low commitment way to try yoga in a fun, informal environment. For more advanced practitioners, it can help you turn your attention toward adapting to your surroundings.  Oddly, I think practicing out in the open requires a person to focus more internally.

When we prepare to practice out in the park, we prepare as best we can, and accept what we can't do anything about: There isn't an air conditioner, there is no music, there may even be bugs and dirt. And possibly even geese, or huge diesel trucks with boat trailers. Our mats may be gross, and it may be disgustingly hot or breezy with a delta chill. You just prepare the best you can and roll with whatever you can't change.

A "summer yoga class in the park" is about practicing with an intent on accepting the world around you as it is by changing your internal response and awareness instead of trying to fight the things you can't control. That internal response may be strong, meditative concentration, a peaceful reflection on a natural element, or a joyfully humbling moment in a balancing pose surrounded by people in the same predicament!

So as we close out this phase of our "Where in Martinez?" Photo Contest, please join the instructor at our studio, Type A Yoga, 815 Marina Vista Ave. here in Martinez at 5pm, or come find Adrienne and any students in the park. They'll be the ones next to a sign. Doing yoga. This month the class will be taught by another instructor at our studio, Adrienne, as I will be out of town at a June wedding...

School's out for Summer "Where in Martinez?": Vacations and Flipping the Script

Speaking of impending summer travel, here is a preview of how you can win free yoga at Type A Yoga for the rest of the summer:

Enter a picture of you doing a yoga pose in an outdoor, public location, either by posting in the comments here, emailing to info@typeayoga.com, or posting to Facebook Page. You could probably even bring a Polaroid in and we'd post it on our cork board! For the rest of the summer, our students and readers on Patch, Facebook, and other sites will guess for the fun of it.

If we select your photo to represent yoga in Martinez (or even out in the world on vacation), you'll win a free month of unlimited yoga or a one-hour custom, private yoga lesson at our studio.

Worried you don't know how to do any poses? It doesn't have to be elaborate! Try the one featured here: Savasana. Lay down in your natural surroundings for a few minutes and focus your attention on breathing.  Or see if there was a pose from a prior week you'd like to try! Come into Type A Yoga on Marina Vista near Ferry and ask us for ideas if you aren't sure. Even if you've never tried yoga before, or you think you're too stiff, uncoordinated, athletic, or stressed out to try yoga, you can find a pose!

By submitting your photo, you acknowledge that we might select it for posting publicly on social media and possibly even in our window or our cork board. Just so you know!
