It was a shock to learn of "Miss Harris's" passing. She stood out at Alhambra in her earlyRead More teaching years for her vivacity, friendliness, warm, open smile, gentle warmth, willingness to help, and smiling sense of humor. In our eyes she was a thoroughly good person and also a damn good typing teacher. Those early morning sessions brought benefit to many. We are fortunate to have had her in our lives. It is sad to learn she is gone. Sincere condolences to her family.

We as a city should honor this great musician with a memorial concert perhaps showcasing our city'sRead More middle/high school jazz bands participating?

Dave Brubeck was not just a jazz giant but also a gentle man and family man, married 70 years to hisRead More college sweetheart. He was the pre-emminent member of the Honorary Board of the Concord Historical Society. Dave loved to talk about his growing up in Concord .While spending his early years in Concord, Dave split his time between taking music lessons from his mother, the town classical piano teacher, and working on his dad's cattle ranch which is now Oakhurst Country Club and the Pavilion. It is lucky for all of us that he decided to make music his life's work. The Society Resource Center has a collection of Brubeck family history and photos, and his archives are housed at the Brubeck Institute at UOP, Stockton. The Resource Center is open on Wednesdays from 1-4 at 1600 Sutter Strret, Ste E,Concord.

Dave Brubeck is our history. As a young couple we loved his music and as he grew older so did weRead More still loving his compositions. We thought he would live forever and so he will as we play and listen to his recordings. He and Paul Desmond must be having a great reunion--we salute them both!

My condolences to Warren's family and friends. Sorry for your Loss
Jack Weir August 10, 2012 at 12:20 pm
My condolences to Warren's family and friends. His commitment to the people of our county isRead More inspirational. Warren was a straight shooter, and did not hesitate to stand up for what he believed was right - traits that are sorely needed these days.

One of the greats. I have a very special place in my heart for this man. He taught me so much duringRead More our time together. His commitment to the community was stellar. Always looking for ways he could better serve his fellow man, no matter who you were. A champion fundraiser that always found ways to make life better for the next generation. You will be missed.

Just so everyone knows, the "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff" author lived in Martinez for aRead More time, and he died in his 40's of a heart attack, inflight. Don't look without you for the answers, don't ask for snake oil. Just know your own soil and plant accordingly. You were created for a specific fruition. We are not told that anymore, but its been basically true of humanity for most of its existence.

Robert, I find this statement very interesting: "In every interaction with another person weRead More claim a status for ourselves and confer a status to the other person." Did that come straight from Covey's work or is it your own interpretation?
Robert Rothgery July 18, 2012 at 02:10 am
Seek first to understand, then to be understood is the habit I most cherish. It is behavior thatRead More is noble and commands authority. In every interaction with another person we claim a status for ourselves and confer a status to the other person. This is an action on the subconscious level, most of us are unaware of what is happening. But when our interactions are based on a habit built on mutual respect, our very natures power us towards our goals. Yeah, I like Steven Covey, RIP.

Gayle will be missed as a great lady and a dedicated public servant. She was the epitome of what anRead More elected official should be in representing her constituency. Always willing to listen, giving unselfishly of her time and talent and demonstrating an uncanny ability to find answers. A very classy lady of the utmost integrity who will be sorely missed by all with whom she came in contact.
Kathi McLaughlin May 21, 2012 at 07:14 pm
Gayle was a wonderful person, a dedicated public servant, and a great friend to Martinez Unified,Read More especially to Las Juntas Elementary. She appointed me to several terms on the Contra Costa Mental Health Commission and was always interested in helping and representing those with mental health issues and their families. As someone said to me today, "She was a classy lady". I couldn't agree more. We will miss her.

I am so sorry to hear about Gail's recent passing. She was very responsive to issues related toRead More Mt.View (an area of unicorporated Martinez) and public health & safety and quality of life here. I was privlaged to serve as her delegate on the Economic Opportunity Council for 9 years. I wish I could have had a chance to say good bye. My prayers and well wishes go out to her family and I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to know her.

I had the good fortune to have Ron as my supervisor both at the Phoenix Programs, in Concord, whereRead More we both worked throughout the 1980's, and then as his Psychological Assistant in private practice. I benefitted from Ron's steadfast support and encouragement of me finding my own voice and style of practicing therapy. His passion for assisting others find their own, heartfelt way and do their own thing was simply unparalleled in my experience. That is no exaggeration. And not just in word, but in action. One of the big reasons the JFK School of Professional Psychology was so successful under his leadership - it financially carried the University during the 1980's & '90's - was that he gave creative folks the opportunity to try out the innovative programs that where their passion. Pulled by "Grad Psych", the University prospered. At times, I guess he had a temper and could be cantankerous. I say "I guess" because over the decade we worked closely together, meeting once or twice weekly in both individual and group settings, he was only facilitative, kind, and thoroughly fits what we call "a true mensch". So, I was surprised when JFK staff would occasionally speak of him with fear and a sense of intimidation. For those of us who knew him in the community mental health setting of the Phoenix Programs, he was consistently sweet, wise, and supportive "Ron", who many of us turned to for support and guidance. I mark his passing with sadness, gratitude and love. Ken Bradford, PhD

I have known Ron Levinson for about 30 years. He was the Dean of Psychology at JFKU when I wasRead More there in the 1980's. Our paths intertwined & crossed time & again over the decades. Ron has been a piller and an inspriation to thousands in his long and fruitful career. His presence filled a room, with smiling eyes, & compassionate intelligence. My heart goes out to his family, and friends~ as the loss of someone so impactful, and so dearly beloved is profound. Rest in peace, Ron. You will be remembered and missed by us all.... And thank you, for the many ways you touched my Life. Cathy Bennett, MFT

Ron was my supervisor last winter/spring when I worked at Richmond TBS. He was the mentor I hadRead More hoped to find but never did while studying at JFK years before. I was ready to give up on pursuing my counseling license until I was re-inspired by Doctor Ron. He profoundly affected my entire outlook on healing and mental health with his generously hopeful and optimistic perspective of the human condition. I will always cherish the time I spent with him listening, discussing, laughing and learning and be forever be in his debt. Thank You Doc Walter Orion MFTi

Great story Jim. I remember I guess about 1970 having one of these 4 fingered Monkees puppet/dollsRead More with the plastic ring that you pull out and when it retracted, you heard one of about five assorted crazy "Monkeyisms". For the hell of it, I took my girlfriend to see him in the summer of 2002 at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. It seems about 98% of Californians between the ages of 45 and 60 were there, and spots on the sand were hard to come by since there were blankets reserving 3 by 5 foot areas for hours beforehand. We got a pretty good spot in the sand however, saw a great show, and when we picked up our blanket to leave after the first show, about 5 groups descended with a vengeance on our now bare small patch of sand for the later show. So he still had it in his 50's. Happy trails and rock on Davy.

Yes, on my way home today I heard the news about DJ and recalled what the Monkees meant to me.Read More Certainly watching the show with my best friend, Susan, as her parents were "cool" and let us sit enraptured once a week, was a highlight. Susan's dad took us to see them in SF (oh, Brian, I remember you being there...haha). [It wasn't too long after that the Fillmore, Avalon, and Family Dog took the place of the Monkees]. Surely, though, these weekly journeys with 4 fab guys was wonderful. G'bye Davy Jones Eileen Jones

Count me in as a believer also. The world was a better place with the Monkees in it. I saw theRead More fellas in SF whatever year that was. Legend holds that Jimi Hendrix opened for them on earlier tour stops, but was not invited to continue the tour.

Jim was a " regular" in the candy store. Marty and I always made sure we were stocked upRead More on peanut brittle and orange slices ( his favorites that he would come by for on Saturdays after the dogs had their grooming appointments) We both thoroughly enjoyed our conversations, and Jim's quick wit. We were very sad to find out he was ill, and now to hear of his passing...We will miss those Saturday visits very much. Sending our love and sincere condolence to all of his family and community of friends. Carol Rose and Marty Bender (Main Street Sweets)

blessings of love, and light... to help his loved ones with their grief now... just know he willRead More still be around... just not in a physical form, but that his energy will be resonated in each one of whom he has touched in some way... what a brilliant man that has survived so much, he just needs his rest now... but whenever you hear a story, or hear laughter... know that he is here....please understand he had to go he stayed way longer than anticipated, but that he had a ball..remember his words .... (“Be kinder than necessary. Everyone is fighting some kind of battle..) Many Blessings ( miss angel)

I am very sorry to hear about Jim. I realize now I hadn't seen him and his 3 pals around town forRead More awhile but had no idea he was ill. He was a very positive person -- always had nice things to say about others and about the town he had adopted.

How sad for the family of this young man and how sad for our Police Department in losing one of itsRead More "family" members. My prayers go out to this family now and for their courageous fight for the past few years to help him with his fight to stay alive for his family. God rest his soul.
