Art In The Park - It's The 43rd Year, And This Time There's A Huge Reunion

This year's arts, crafts, and music gathering in Susana Street Park will be taking place at the same time as the Remembering Martinez Decades Reunion, so look for some old friends in the crowd.

Art in the Park is on its 43rd year, and as always, the event will feature artists and craftspeople from throughout the Bay Area on Sunday, Aug. 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Susana Street Park, one block from City Hall. This popular free event, presented by the Martinez Arts Association, also features music throughout the day.

But this year, it also takes place on the last day of festivities of the Remembering Martinez Decades Reunion, which is drawing Alhambra High and Alhambra Union High alumni from 1949 through 1989. There are people who plan to attend this special event who haven't been back to Martinez in many years, and more than a few will likely wind up at this year's Art in the Park.

The closing musical act, 4:00 -5:00 – El Dayasuno – a popular Latin/jazz/rock band, will feature band member Bobby Knight, who is himself an Alhambra High Alumni.

Artists and crafts persons from all over the bay area, west coast  and as far away as Oregon will be offering their original hand crafted masterpieces – beautiful and practical objects d’art for every taste and pocket book.  Some artists will be demonstrating their trades while others will have items for sale which include pottery, decorative tiles, wood carvings, paintings, sculptures, clothing, unusual jewelry and much, much more----.  Come meet the artist and browse over the exquisite array of works.

Food booths will feature such treats as deep fried asparagus, stuffed artisian breads, sandwiches and a good old fashion hotdog. A beer and wine garden will also provide adult refreshments.

For your entertainment during the day’s festivities music and fun from the stage will include:10:00–10:15 – Opening by Mayor Rob Schroder, Star Spangled Banner by Shea Arnaudon.  Flag ceremony by Boy Scout Troop 184.
10:15–11:15 – Thomas Martin – Playing a lively blend of folk and rock.  Thomas’ original songs are as much fun as the cover songs he mixes into his set.
11:30-12:15 – Garageland Rodeo – The Rio-Duo with Jay Olson –This band plays throughout the area.  The pared down duo is perfect for relaxing atmosphere at Art in the Park.  Don’t let that fool you though –these guys play fun music that will keep you hopping.
12:30-1:30 – Melody Walker & Jason Groopman – Melody is a Martinez native and is passing through on a national tour ranging from Alaska to Nashville promoting her new CD.  Jason, plays a mean guitar and mandolin.  Come see them while you can-they are heading for the big time!
2:00-3:30 – Caroompas Room – Jim and company are back again with all that great rock, funk, and blues.  This time they are bringing a horn section,  so be ready for the show.

In between sets Martinez’s very own Harriet Burt will be the Mistress of Ceremonies entertaining in her own infamous fashion.

This is a family event with plenty of children’s activities and face painting.  All proceeds benefit the Martinez Arts Association scholarship and grant programs.  Come and enjoy.  For additional information and video visit our website, www.martinezarts.org.
