Join a National Park Service ranger on a free morning bird walk in honor of International Migratory Bird Day at the John Muir National Historic Site.

We will begin at 8:30 AM with a gradual climb to take in the sights and sounds of Mount Wanda’s magnificent avian wildlife. Lucky birders might see a Red-Shouldered hawk, Steller’s Jay, Western Bluebird, Bewick’s Wren, Spotted Towhee, or even a Great Horned Owl. There have been at least 100 species of birds identified on Mt. Wanda and over 40 breeding species that raise their young on site. Join Ranger Cheryl Abel for this saunter up Mt. Wanda and help create the day’s bird list.

Mt. Wanda , a 326 acre open space of oak woodlands and grassland, is part of the John Muir National Historic Site. Created in 1964, John Muir NHS preserves the home, landscapes, and grave site of conservationist and national park advocate John Muir. Mt. Wanda is named after Muir’s eldest daughter, Annie Wanda Muir.

Meet at the CalTrans Park and Ride lot at the corner of Alhambra Avenue and Franklin Canyon Road, in Martinez (at the Alhambra Ave. exit off Highway 4).   Bring water and binoculars (if you have them).   Wear good walking shoes because the trail is steep.   Heavy rain cancels.

For more information, please call the John Muir National Historic Site at (925) 228-8860.
