Martinez School District Backs Off Controversial Plan

The Martinez Unified School District has backed off a proposal that angered many parents and staff when they heard John Muir Elementary School's Principal Jessica Conkle's time on campus would be cut.

The proposal was designed to explore administrative structures and techniques in an effort to improve academic standards, according to Superintendent Rami Muth.

Conkle would have split time on campus with an assistant or intern. Conkle would have been on campus three days a week. Conkle would have worked two days a week in the district offices training faculty in the State's new Common Core curriculum.

"Jessica Conkle was hired as principal a year ago at John Muir. We talked with the staff and they felt it was too soon for so much change," Muth said.
