Letter to the Editor: The Herns Bring Out The Best In Martinez

Martinez School District Superintendent Rami Muth writes about the community's reaction after 11-year-old Aaron Hern was injured in the Boston Marathon explosions.

From Martinez Unified School District Superintendent Rami Muth:

Martinez has once again shown what kind of a community it is. There has been an outpouring of love and support for Aaron and the entire Hern family. A fundraiser has been organized by Roxx on Main where 100 percent of the proceeds will go to the family. The restaurant has donated the food and the servers have given their time. This is one of several events that have spontaneously planned to offer their support for the family during these challenging times.

I believe that the schools are also involved in planning special ways to honor Aaron and his family. The Herns may be thousands of miles away in distance but they are clearly in the thoughts and hearts of all of us in Martinez.

It is not surprising to see this reaction. Alan and Katherine are actively engaged in almost every element of life in Martinez. Katherine was the chair of the Measure B and Measure K bond campaigns for the school district and was actively involved in the bond the city passed to upgrade the parks and recreational facilities. She is involved in Kiwanis and freely gives of her time to the PTA at her children's school.

Alan is also deeply involved in the schools through his coaching efforts and his leadership on the Alhambra campus. This is a family that stands together to make life better in Martinez.

Aaron and Abigail are exceptional children who are following in the footsteps of their parents. They are actively involved in their schools and in many outside activities.

It has been said,"... that this is an era that requires people who believe they have the capacity to make a difference and who step forward to do so." The Herns are a living example of a family that exemplifies that message.
