Getting Your Family Ready for the Upcoming School Year

Martinez schools in the Martinez Unified School District go back Aug. 21; schools in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District start on Aug. 29. What advice would you offer to parents about getting kids ready for the new school year?

The unbounded joy of summer is almost over for Martinez youngsters. School starts up again on Wednesday, Aug. 21 in the Martinez Unified School District, and Aug. 29 in the Mount Diablo Unified School District, and it's time to get back to a classroom frame of mind. Along with lots of smiles and adventures, summer also brought about later bed times and, sometimes, a loss of routine.

Here are a few tips for getting back-to-school ready:

1. Reinstitute Bed Time: It's time to get your kids on a regular sleep schedule. Taking into consideration their wake-up time, make sure your kids get at least a good eight hours of sleep.

2. Set Appointments: Be sure to have all physicals, shots and records up to date. Doctor's offices are busy this time of year, so give yourself plenty of time. Also make sure your seventh grader has his/her whooping cough vaccine (for the 2012-13 school year and beyond, all seventh graders are required to have proof of whooping cough shots for the new school year).

3. Get a Calendar: Pick up a school calendar that marks important dates. The start of a school year brings important meetings, days off, sporting events and other activities, so always remember to jot it down!

4. Avoid Over-Shopping: No need to go crazy with back to school shopping. Check to see if you already have classroom staples before going out to buy more. When it comes to clothing, look for hand-me-downs and anything that still fits from last year.

5. Turn Off the TV: During the summer, there's usually a more relaxed attitude when it comes to watching TV. However, now is the time to prepare your kids for a homework frame of mind. A great way to get them into the new routine is to have them read a book, do a puzzle or anything that requires creativity and imagination.

I have found it's very hard to find a parking spot there. Another negative is the number of theRead More "constant outsdoorsmen" types lurking all around. I've been confronted several times and worried about leaving my car there.

I am happy to know that Mr. Behan's review of "STID" is now available. Might we knowRead More where it is available? Perhaps I am just an Apple lovin' technopeasant, but despite my frantic serial clicking on text without links, I could not find the actual story. Alas and alack I may never know why there is no darkness in "...Into Darkness" (or Lightness). Oh, and welcome back Jim!

The main reason I don't go to any of the businesses downtown is the lack of parking. What littleRead More there is is taken up by the owners of these establishments. God forbid they park somewhere else less convenient so actual paying customers can frequent their businesses.

Jim, then that's yet another penalty for showing up for jury duty. The system needs a big overhaul.Read More
