Alhambra High Performs Musical Fairytale

The drama club's new musical, "Once Upon a Mattress," retells the classic fairytale by Hans Christian Anderson about and a princess, a pea and a sleepless night.

The drama club at Alhambra High is taking on a classic fairytale for its upcoming show — Hans Christian Anderson's Princess and the Pea, with a musical twist.

"Once Upon a Mattress," retells the story of a young princess seeking shelter on a stormy night. She happens upon a wife-seeking prince, who tests her claim to royal roots by placing a pea under a mountain of mattresses before offering her a place to rest for the night. A true princess would be robbed of a sound sleep and bruise like peach at even such an insignificant obstruction. Will she?

Join the Alhambra High students in the performing arts building to find out.

Opening night is Thursday, April 26 at 7 p.m. The show runs at the same time April 27, as well as May 3, 4 and 5. Tickets are between $8 and $12 for adults, with a discount for advance purchases, and can be bought online on the Alhambra High school website. Children under 12 years old are $5.

Are your children performing in "Once Upon a Mattress?" Are you going to a show? Let us know in the comments.

Paint the railroad trestle that crosses Alhambra. It's an eyesore.
