Where Should The City Build An Overpass From Downtown To Waterfront Park?

A series of public meetings on the question starts May 23 at City Hall.

An overpass that would carry pedestrians, cyclists and vehicles over the railroad tracks from downtown to the waterfront has long been a dream of city officials. A series of public meetings are scheduled to get public input on the idea, which seems to be moving toward reality.

The first meeting will take place May 23 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 525 Henrietta Street.

“It has long been recognized that a second connection from downtown to the waterfront is desirable,” said a press release from the city. Amtrak and Union Pacific trains often block the Ferry Street entrance and exit to Waterfront Park, which has been one impediment to developing commercial uses like restaurants there.

A pedestrian/vehicle bridge has been envisioned for many years, generally somewhere to the east of Ferry Street. City officials have tried in vain to get the railroad involved in a partnership that would help pay for an overpass.

“This study represents the first step in figuring out the best way to develop a secondary connection which is exciting and vital to the development of the Martinez Marina and Waterfront Park areas which will benefit downtown Martinez,” said city engineer Tim Tucker.  He said secondary access will provide safer railroad crossing conditions, reduce traffic congestion and delays, and provide better emergency vehicle response and patrol of the park.

The actual construction of an overpass is many years away, given the funding and environmental challenges faced by the city. But Tucker said input from the residents and merchants is an important part of the process.

Once a location and a funding source is identified, the overpass will probably happen in two phases: the first will be the pedestrian/bicycle phase, and the second will be for vehicles.
