Should Jurors Pay For Parking?

Mayor Schroder and at least one city council member believe that jurors who serve in Martinez should not have parking tickets forgiven. What do you think?

It's difficult to be a juror — you must take time off of your daily routine, sit in a courtroom and listen to hours of often-boring legalese. After the trial, you find yourself in a room with other strangers where the fate of one or more lives rests with your decision. This can take days, and even weeks.

And for Walnut Creekers, there is the added task of traveling to the Contra Costa Superior Court in Martinez.

So to ask jurors to find and pay for parking might seem a bit out of line. Presently, jurors who receive a parking ticket in Martinez will have it forgiven by the courts.

But lately, there is a move to have that reversed. , when the subject of new credit card-reading meters were being discussed. Mayor Rob Schroder agreed, pointing out that the jurors in Walnut Creek courtrooms are required to pay for their own parking.

Merchants have long decried the unfairness of having their customers required to pay up at the meter or face expensive parking fines, while jurors take up precious downtown spaces for nothing. Others say that jurors are serving an important function in our society, are being exposed to downtown businesses they otherwise might not see, and should get a break.

What do you say? Should jurors have to pay for parking in Martinez? Tell us in the comments.

Agree with what has already been said that free parking and public transit should be available to those called to jury duty. Also, the businesses in Martinez must realize that those jurors are also spending money at their cafes and restaurants, etc.

There is NO way jurors should have to pay for parking!! That's he most ridiculous thing ever. If the city is looking for more revenue there are much more reasonable ways to get it. I just got a request for jury service in Martinez. I am NOT happy about having to go there and deal with parking.

No jurors should not pay for parking. The individual found guilty should be responsible for paying all the costs associated to his trial.

Jurors should not have to pay for parking...anywhere! There should be easy and free parking available to all jurors in all cities, period, end of sentence!

Such ideas are truly out of touch with the realities of being impaneled on a jury. " Excuse me your honor, can you hold the proceedings? I have to go feed my meter." Talk about contempt of court. Council Woman DeLaney thinks the jurors are wasting valuable parking that ought to be freed up for shoppers. I will be my bottom dollar she hasn't been on a jury in decades.
