Patch Poll: How Should The Council Decide Tonight On The Proposed Lice Removal Salon?

It appears the City Council is going to allow the lice removal salon to locate on the 500 block of Main Street. What do you think about that?

Tonight the City Council is poised to enter into an agreement with the owners of a proposed lice removal salon, Ladybugs, which would permit the operation of the salon on the 500 block of Main Street. The agreement would allow the operation of the salon, but would prohibit any signs or photos that use the words lice, louse, larvae on the front of the building.

In other words, the theory is that discretion will mitigate the "ick" factor that so worries the restaurant and store owners on the block, and other downtown boosters, who fear that customers will stay away in droves from any Main Street business located near a lice removal salon.

Proponents point to other cities - such as Lafayette and Burlingame - where such operations are doing well. They say that the Martinez salon will bring customers downtown who would otherwise not show up, and those customers will find reason to shop and eat there.

Opponents say that is one of the problems - if word gets out that kids and families with lice are walking around downtown, no one else will want to shop or eat there, for fear of getting infected themselves. There is also the famous "ick" factor, which states that the idea of lice just grosses people out, and is not condusive to a healthy retail environment, especially in an area already struggling hard to get by.

We've asked before, but since it's on the council agenda tonight, we feel it's relevant to ask one more time: what do you think, Martinez Patch users? Is this a good business, or a (sorry) lousy one for Main Street?
