No Change? Martinez's New Parking Meters Take Plastic

The Martinez City Council unanimously approved a plan to install 165 parking meters that will accept credit cards. The Council is also raising parking rates at some locations.

The customers who walk through the doors at Legal Grounds on Main Street are usually looking for a good cup of coffee ... they're also often looking for change to feed the parking meter.

A parking meter violation can cost you $38, so don't take your chances with an expired meter.

Pretty soon, you might not have to scramble for quarters to feed the meters. The Martinez City Council approved a plan to buy 165 new meters that will accept credit cards. The City reported it will cost $85,750 for the new meters, including shipping and installation.

The City retrofitted 62 meters on Main Street, between Court and and Castro, during a trial period last summer to accept credit cards.

The City also unanimously approved a proposal to raise parking rates from $.25 to $.50 per hour at 10-hour parking meter locations.

The next scheduled City Council meeting is scheduled for July 24.
