City Seeks Input On Two Park Projects

A new park on Center Avenue and improvements to Waterfront Park are the subject of several meetings beginning Saturday.

City officials are seeking public input on two park projects — a proposed new park on Center Avenue and improvements to Waterfront Park. A series of meetings, beginning Saturday, are scheduled to get input from the public.

According to recreation manager Mitch Austin, the city is applying for two state grants that would fund the projects. The more input from the public, the stronger the grant applications will be, he said.

"This is a great opportunity for the city to reach out to and engage community members in designing the parks that they and their families will use," Austin said. "We want Martinez citizens to tell us what they would like to see improved or developed in those areas."

Waterfront Park is overused, he said, and needs to be improved to meet growing demands for recreation. The second site is open space owned by the city on Center Avenue, bordered by Roman and Rolling Hill ways. The meetings will ask residents what activities and amenities they want in the parks.

"It's a highly competitive process," Austin said of the grants. "But the more community input we get, the better our proposal will fare against others from across the state."
