City May Hire A New Manager

Wednesday Martinez council agenda has a resolution in which the council would authorize recruitment of a deputy director of strategic planning and community development.

The City Council may make a decision Wednesday on adding a management position to city staff.

The City Council meets at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Council Chambers, City Hall, 525 Henrietta St., Martinez.

A resolution before the council authorizes recruitment to begin for a new job — deputy director of strategic planning and community development — with a targeted July 1 start date. The proposed position has a salary range of $110,000-$132,000, depending on qualifications, according to a memo for the council by City Manager Phil Vince.

"To balance the last four years of operating budgets, Council and staff experienced a dramatic reduction in upper management level staff, which has slowed momentum in getting projects done and moving the City of Martinez forward," Vince wrote.

The deputy director would help with council-endorsed goals, Vince said, including making downtown more vibrant and establishing an Economic Development Corporation to strengthen unreinforced buildings downtown and assist owners with business loans.
