Would You Compliment the Cops?

A form on the city's website allows happy residents to leave a compliment for the cops. What would you say about the Martinez Police Department?

Ideally, encounters with the cops should be seldom, friendly, and not end with a ticket in your hand, cuffs around your wrists or a bitter attitude.

It doesn't always work out that way, and one sour experience can form negative perceptions of an entire department, and police in general, as citizens share their stories of personal injustice. Cops can quite easily get a bad rap.

But what about the positive experiences? Are they just as powerful, just as perception-altering? And how do we share them with the cops and the community?

The Martinez Police Department offers citizens a quick way to leave a compliment — by dropping a note online

Would you compliment the Martinez Police Department? What would you say? Have you expressed your appreciation in the past? How? Share your thoughts and experiences in the comments below.

Here's the mission statement of the Martinez Police Department:

The members of the Martinez Police Department are dedicated to providing the highest quality police services in order to enhance community safety, protect life and property, to reduce crime and the fear of crime. To accomplish this mission, we will continue to develop partnerships within the community to resolve problems and improve the safety and quality of life in our city.

Can you imagine if we didn't have them? Our lives would not be the same. It is not a perfect system, nothing is. But I think it is not only something we take for granted, we sometimes bash them all as a group, in the media and in general, for some bad apples out of thousands and thousands of good cops and departments. We are lucky in Martinez. to have had a great force and police chiefs over the years.
I was down on my luck and going through a very difficult time of my life years ago and the police were called. I didn't commit a crime, but I could have been treated differently. I was treated with respect and it was a definite turning point of my life. I was no one at the time you would look at and say what a nice young man, more like a drunk loser. But it was actually Gary Petterson our current Police Chief who helped me and had faith in me. I will never forget that and I want to thank him personally here for actually caring about someone he didn't even know.

Sure. we should give credit where credit is due, and the police deserve credit more times than they deserve complaints. I like this article.

MPD is the best agency I work with hands down they do a good job of being proactive and they have some good young police officers that will be the future of MPD

MPD does so much more for the community, besides fighting crime. Not only do they put their lives on the line on a daily basis, but they also hold fundraisers and support this community without wavering. I knew when I saw "THE CHIEF" Peterson at the small town 4th of July celebration , that we are indeed a lucky community, and even luckier that our police force is run by the best.

I would certainly compliment the police when appropriate. I have done this before. Some years ago, I was involved in a minor fender bender on a Concord street, I was scruffy, driving a beat up old car, and the other person involved was upscale, in a nice late model vehicle. When the police arrived, they listened to both sides' accounts, and it would have been easy to believe the "respectible guy", but they decided (correctly) that it was my story that was truthful. I sent a nice letter to the PD, mentionin the office by name.
