The CHP was pursuing the suspect's vehicle Saturday at 9:30 p.m. in the Pacheco area when the male motorist let out a 7-year-old child from his vehicle and then rammed a CHP patrol car and attempted to strike a Martinez Police Department unit, according to Jimmy Lee, director of public affairs for the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff.

Lee did not disclose violation details behind the initial pursuit.

The suspect, not yet identified by law enforcement, continued to flee when his vehicle collided with a telephone pole and parked car on Pacheco Boulevard near Falling Star Drive, Lee said.

The suspect allegedly exited his vehicle with his hands concealed in his waistband, according to Lee, and "the officer feared for his life and discharged his firearm at the suspect who refused to comply with orders."

The suspect was transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek and is expected to survive his wounds, he said.

A gun allegedly was found in the suspect's vehicle and drugs were found on him, Lee said.

This case is being investigated by the Contra Costa County Sheriff's and DA's offices and CHP per the countywide officer-involved protocol.
