Teens Shot In El Cerrito Wednesday Are Albany High School Students

One teen remains hospitalized, but in stable condition, according to his mother.

The two teenagers shot Wednesday afternoon in El Cerrito are students at Albany High School, according to a letter the school's principal distributed Thursday. Below is Ted Barone's message in its entirety:

To the Albany High School Community,

Yesterday afternoon after the high school was out for the day (we are in early dismissal due to final exam schedule), three of our students, including one freshman and two sophomores, were sitting near the BART tracks near Fairmount Drive in El Cerrito.

What we understand is that they were approached by two men who asked about their shoes. When one of our students stood up, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot the student, injuring him critically. Another one of our students was also shot in the face, but thankfully received just a flesh wound.

The other student was able to escape without physical injury.  The assailants escaped.

I spoke with the parents of all three students last night and this morning. The young man who was injured critically is still in the hospital and his mother describes his condition as stable.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families as they recover from this awful incident. We'll do our best to keep everyone informed as the situation evolves.

--Armed guards at the school would not have stopped this from happening off-campus. --If the teenaged victims had been armed, they could have returned fire and shot up the neighborhood even more. --Wearing cool sneakers can lead to problems (the local tv news last night interviewed a fellow AHS student "live" in front of AHS, who then blamed the victims for displaying fancy sneakers). --We now know the race of the perps, what about the victims (are we to assume their race b/c from Albany?) --Perps in hoodies. Victims? --Victims from out of district (walking after school in EC)? --Guns don't shoot people, perps do. --If perps had assault rifles, then greater damage inflicted. --Do white kids ever wear hoodies, listen to gangsta rap, hang out?

Gun control is an answer, not the answer. Education and youth programs are also an answer. Less bumps is an excellent idea!

Lots of minors get a weapon from their own homes. Perhaps gun control could prevent stupid people from buying guns? How bout a simple IQ test?

I know people scream about political correctness and wanting descriptions of "perps" (some people watch way too much TV). But a description of "young African American males wearing hoodies" really doesn't tell you anything useful. Nor would "teenaged white males in blue jeans." Neither add anything to the discussion or provide any useful information for apprehending anyone.

Upsetting to hear Albany classmates blame these kids for wearing gangland footwear, and for supposedly arguing with the shooters. I know our kids don't want parents to say it's now too dangerous to wander around with friends after school but, when I hear these comments, I remind them that those kids were victims and didn't deserve this assault.
