Police, School District Respond To 'Threat' At Alhambra High

Extra security will be provided to the high school today as officials respond to what they call 'a threat.'

Update: Martinez Unified School District Assistant Superintendent Rick Rubino said Thursday night that the district received a threat that "came in the form of an email saying someone wanted to do harm at Alhambra High School on Friday, Oct. 14."

He said the police are working on tracking down the source of the email, though so far they have been unsuccessful. Though there is no evidence to suggest that the threat is credible, Rubino said that the district has taken steps to provide extra security throughout the school day today.

"The police said that sometimes these threats are made by people who just want to see if they can disrupt the operation of the school and cause havoc," Rubino said. "In consultation with the police department, we made the decision to keep the school open."

Robocalls were sent out to parents and students of the school, and the staff was advised of the situation. Rubino said the staff will go over security procedures this morning. Police will be on hand as the football team boards the bus this afternoon for the game at Acalanes High in Lafayette. A scheduled blood drive on campus has also been cancelled, he said.

"We have received information of a potential threat at Alhambra High School for Friday, October 14th," Rubino said in a release. "We have been working closely with the Martinez Police Department on this matter.  Although we have no information that this is a credible threat, we will be providing additional security at the school, including a police presence and additional administrative support. The safety of our students and staff is our primary concern."
