Pedestrian Killed On I-680 Tuesday Night

The CHP says the man left his parked van and walked into traffic on the freeway.

A pedestrian was struck and killed on Interstate Highway 680 near Martinez on Tuesday night after he reportedly walked into traffic, California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Maguire said today.

The pedestrian, believed to be an 18-year-old man, was with a group of people in a van that had broken down on the right side of northbound I-680, south of the Pacheco Boulevard off-ramp, at about 10:10 p.m., Maguire said.

For an unknown reason, the victim got out of the van and walked into lanes of traffic, where he was struck by two vehicles, one driven by a
23-year-old Sacramento woman and the other by a 39-year-old Vallejo man.

Both drivers stopped at the scene, and there was no indication that either of them was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. The coroner's office was still working to confirm his identity this morning, a deputy coroner said.

The CHP advises motorists who must stop on the highway to stay in their vehicles with their seatbelts fastened. If they must get out of the vehicle, they are advised to get as far away from traffic as possible. If there is a guardrail, pedestrians should go to the far side of it, where they will be more protected, Maguire said.

Investigators were still interviewing witnesses today and are asking anyone with information about the case to call them at (925) 646-4980.
