Martinez Throws 'Night Out' Block Party

After you get off work Tuesday, come celebrate National Night Out

To quote Fred Rogers, "Won't you be my neighbor?"

Martinez Police Chief Gary Peterson is hoping neighbors will get together on Tuesday for National Night Out. Residents across the country are encouraged to host or attend block parties as a way to strengthen community bonds and create safer neighborhoods.

Most National Night Out gatherings have a definite street party vibe, with plenty of eating, chatting with neighbors, and kids playing.  But the chance to talk informally with the police officers who stop by is an integral part of the event which, after all, is rooted in crime prevention. The block parties lead to Neighborhood Watch meetings, which in turn lead to requests for home security checks during which officers assess homes for security risks.

Martinez has arranged some special events for residents, including live music at Rankin Park, a playhouse at Les Schwab Tires and more events at Golden Hills Park. The fun starts at 5:30 p.m.
