When officers arrived, they arrested Joshua Richard Carter, 23, on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance, Richey said.

Carter was taken to police headquarters for booking, but while he was being processed, he became combative and tried to strangle the arresting officer, police say.

The officer was able to fight off Carter, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment, Richey said.

The officer also was treated for injuries, but was able to return to work.

Investigators plan to present the case to the district attorney's office later this week, and Carter likely will face charges of drug possession, and felony assault and battery on a police officer.
