Martinez Burglary Suspects Arrested After High-Speed Chase in Stolen Car; One Remains At-Large

Two residential burglary suspects are behind bars after allegedly leading police on a high-speed chase from Martinez to Hercules in a stolen car, then crashing the car and fleeing, police said today.

A burglary and auto theft were reported at a home in the 200 block of Park Street in Martinez on Monday evening, with several personal items and two guns reported stolen, according to Martinez police.

Early Tuesday morning, police spotted the stolen car with three men inside heading south in the 1600 block of Berrellesa Street, police said.

Police said the driver sped away, prompting a high-speed chase that ended when the car crashed and overturned in the 1200 block of Willow Avenue in Hercules.

The three suspects ran from the scene, but two were found in a nearby apartment complex a short time later with the help of a police K-9.

The men were identified as 26-year-old Edward Garofalo of Martinez and 25-year-old Mateo Bustos of Alameda, according to police.

Both were arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property, evading police and resisting arrest and were taken to county jail in Martinez.

The third suspect remains at large.

Police said officers recovered several stolen items from the stolen car.
