A pedestrian who was struck and killed on Interstate Highway 680 in Martinez on Tuesday night has been identified by the Contra Costa County coroner's office as 18-year-old Washington state resident Charles Wallace.

Wallace had been with a group of people in a van that had broken down on northbound I-680 south of the Pacheco Boulevard off-ramp at about 10:10 p.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Tom Maguire said.

Wallace, for an unknown reason, got out of the van and walked into traffic, where he was struck by two vehicles, one driven by a 23-year-old Sacramento woman and the other by a 39-year-old  Vallejo man.

Both drivers stopped at the scene, and there was no indication that either was under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Maguire said.

Wallace was pronounced dead at the scene.
