Inmate Who Died In County Jail Identified

The cause of death is still under investigation.

by Bay City News

An inmate who died at the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez on Friday has been identified as 46-year-old Pittsburg resident Alvin Jackson.

At about 4:10 a.m. Friday, an inmate notified a sheriff's deputy that his cellmate, Jackson, was unresponsive, sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee said.

Jail medical staff and other crews began life-saving procedures on Jackson but he was pronounced dead at 4:27 a.m., Lee said.

He said Jackson had several existing medical conditions.

An autopsy was conducted this morning but his cause of death is pending toxicology tests, according to the sheriff's office.

The death is being investigated by the sheriff's office and Contra Costa County District Attorney's Office, which is standard procedure for in-custody deaths.
