Hydrant Sheared Off in Downtown Martinez

Reader sends in photo of gushing hydrant

It was quite a sight in downtown Martinez this afternoon.

Patch reader Mandy Rose was one of the folks who saw the sheared off fire hydrant at Escobar and Ferry streets.

She snapped a photo and sent it in to us.

Rose said a truck drove onto the sidewalk, slammed into hydrant and then drove off.

The water was eventually shut off. Martinez police did not have additional information on the incident on Friday evening.

I live across from the fire hydrant shown in the picture. There's more to this story than just the truck hitting it. It souded like a huge explosion and I went out on my balcony and called the cops. A couple were in a car parked diagonally on the street and there were 3 or 4 people in it arguing about something. They were so loud that I originally was going to call the police about them when the hydrant got killed.
