By Bay City News Service

A 3-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being mauled by a pit bull in unincorporated Martinez this morning, an animal control lieutenant said.

Contra Costa Animal Control officials received a report of an attack in the 3100 block of Plum Street around 11:35 a.m., Lt. Cedric Cain said.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland to receive treatment for injuries suffered in the attack.

Cain said he did not know the extent of the child's injuries.

Animal services officers have taken the dog into custody and its owner has relinquished ownership of the animal.

The dog will be quarantined and euthanized, as is standard procedure after a violent attack occurs, Cain said.

No further details were immediately available.
