Girl Mauled By Dog Friday Morning

A 3-year-old girl is in the hospital after being attacked by a pit bull Friday morning.

By Bay City News Service

A 3-year-old girl has been hospitalized after being mauled by a pit bull in unincorporated Martinez this morning, an animal control lieutenant said.

Contra Costa Animal Control officials received a report of an attack in the 3100 block of Plum Street around 11:35 a.m., Lt. Cedric Cain said.

The child was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland to receive treatment for injuries suffered in the attack.

Cain said he did not know the extent of the child's injuries.

Animal services officers have taken the dog into custody and its owner has relinquished ownership of the animal.

The dog will be quarantined and euthanized, as is standard procedure after a violent attack occurs, Cain said.

No further details were immediately available.

Something is wrong when a toddler is left in the company of ANY dog without supervision - and particularly in the vacinity of a pit bull, no matter how "sweet & gentle" the dog is "supposed" to be.

These dogs were bred for jaw strength and aggressiveness. I think that anybody that owns one should be required to carry a massive insurance policy or face a large fine and get the dog impounded. Why anyone would own a Pit Bull is beyond me. I would not have an alligator in my home and that goes for a Pit Bull also. Jerry Ott

Ban the breed....plain and simple...

How many people are beaten, murdered, raped, mugged, abused, violently attacked in the Bay Area each year by humans? Hundreds. Maybe one or two by pit bulls. Yes they are very strong and potentially dangerous, but I really don't see the outrage on humans as a group when someone is gunned down, just the attacker. Not all dogs are created equal. But try not to group all pit bulls as one group any more than you would group all humans. Humans are the most dangerous creature on earth by far, but take each case one by one. I know many gentle pit bulls, and some that should not be on the street anymore than a few humans I know of. I'm sorry this happened, I am sorry every time someone is attacked, kids or adults without cause by animals or humans. But sad to say you want to eliminate 99 percent of violence on the street, ban humans.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion but, Please read this before you make what you think is a factual statement. http://www.rescueeverydog.org/pitbull_breed.html I have been personally attacked as a very young child by a dalmation, a border collie and our own pet poodle mix. Little ones should never be left alone with any dog. Their curious nature could be read wrong by any dog. Sadly it is people who train these dogs to be aggresive towards people.

Not all pit bulls are bad and anyone that owns one knows this to be fact. MOST of them are actually as gentle and loveable as a poodle - unless they feel threatened The aggressive ones are trained to be that way. Any time ANY dog attacks a child it is usually because the child has been left alone with the animal & has teased it or has been mean to it....even though the child will deny doing anything to the dog. Bottom line is WATCH YOUR CHILDREN & PETS then TAKE RESPONSIBILITY for your non-actions as well as their actions.

A 3 year old should not be left unsupervised period. Before you people blame the dog breed you should have ALL the facts or you just look ignorant.........

Ban the humans that train them to be aggressive.

I own a pit bull and I think its the way they were raised by humans when they were pups to be the way they were. My pit has been with me since day one and he has never been aggressive in any waybut I would never leave him alone with a child.

I am very glad to see more Martinez folks with brains that see the whole picture than the closed minded ones that wrote the first two posts! I found my Pit Bull in the streets of Richmond on my way to work. He was lost, wet and very scared. I stopped to try to get him out of the street and he came home with me that day. I have never wanted a Pit Bull but I didn't want him to get hit. Turns out he is the most loving dog I have ever met. I take him to the local dog parks and I have to protect him from other breads because he is so submissive. Needless to say, I am very blessed to have found him and everyone that meets him wants to take him home! Lucky to live in Martinez.

My heart goes out to the lil girl attacked, im just glad to hear shes ok. I am a pitbull owner and also have a 5yr. Old daughter. They both get along great but I would never leave them unatended together no matter what breed my dog is. I hate hearing about pitbull attacks because that automatically gives my family harrassessment from those too ignorant to know that its not the breed its the way the dog is raised. Saying to ban a breed would be like saying to ban a human race because that race is violent I doubt we would ever do that so why discrimnate on all the other innocent in the world. So much more to say but I could go all day. Thank u

Animals and humans with a history of unpredictable behaviors, should never be left unattended.
Staci D April 26, 2012 at 05:11 PM
This is very sad and I do not wish to speculate on whether or not there was neglect. I do want to say that this can happen with any dog, even when adult supervision is present. I am not a fan of pit bulls and would like to see people who have children choose not to own them. That said, please know that even the cutest cuddliest pup is capable of doing this and that dogs are wild animals who can be unpredictable. Even constant adult supervision and training is not a guarantee that your child or you for that matter will not suffer an attack. Please know the risks before you get a pet.
