UPDATE: Electrical Mishap Causes Smoking In Shell Refinery Control Room In Martinez

UPDATED: Tuesday, May 6, 1:20 p.m.

Smoke has been cleared from a control room at the Shell oil refinery in Martinez after an apparent electrical malfunction caused some smoking late this morning, according to fire personnel and a refinery spokesman.

Crews were dispatched around 11:55 a.m. to reports of a small fire in a "clean fuels" control room at the center of the refinery located at 3485 Pacheco Blvd., a Contra Costa County Fire Protection District dispatcher said.

"We didn't see any flames, just some smoking in the control room," Shell refinery spokesman Steve Lesher said.

Lesher said refinery emergency response personnel were able to clear the smoke within about 20 minutes.

He said the control room where the smoking occurred is not related to the refinery's oil processing units.

The cause of the incident is under investigation, Lesher said.
