Coyote Spotted in Martinez Neighborhood

Life can still be a little wild in Martinez as some residents discovered recently.

A medium-sized coyote was reported seen in the area of Vine Hill Way and Morello Avenue. Animal control officials investigated but were unable to find the coyote.

The alleged sighting is a reminder that we live in an area where people must coexist with wildlife.

The California Department of Fish and Game offers the following advice to residents:

  • Do not feed the deer. It is illegal in California.
  • Do not allow pets outside -- particularly at dawn, dusk or night.
  • Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting coyotes, raccoons or opossums.

If you encounter a coyote:

  • Do not run.
  • Face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms.
  • If necessary, throw rocks or other objects at the coyote to scare it away.
  • If attacked, fight back.
