Couple, 7-Year-Old Girl Injured in Contra Costa County Crash

The crash, which involved a possible DUI driver, occurred in unincorporated Concord Monday night.

A couple and their 7-year-old daughter were seriously injured when a suspected drunken driver smashed into the back of their Ford Taurus in unincorporated Concord on Monday night, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The crash was reported at about 8:20 p.m. Monday on Concord Avenue near the Sam's Club store at 1225 Concord Ave.

CHP Officer John Fransen said the driver of the Taurus, 51-year-old Martinez resident Julian Flores, had just pulled out of the parking lot of Sam's Club and was traveling west on Concord Avenue when a speeding blue Toyota Tacoma hit his car from behind.

The Tacoma, driven by 35-year-old Concord resident Jared Bickford, had been traveling at an "extremely high rate of speed" prior to the crash, Fransen said.

The impact pushed the Taurus into a nearby pole, and the Tacoma overturned and struck a different pole, he said.

The little girl in the Taurus was in a booster seat, Fransen said. She suffered cuts to her face and was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland.

Her parents in the front seats both suffered serious head injuries and were taken to John Muir Medical Center, Fransen said.

When officers arrived and got the young girl out of her car seat, she "immediately lunged toward where her mom was and just wanted to be with her mom," Fransen said.

He did not have an update on the family members' conditions Tuesday.

Bickford was arrested on suspicion of DUI, Fransen said. The crash remains under investigation, and any witnesses are asked to call the CHP at (925) 646-4980.
