A 12-year-old boy was fatally struck while on his bicycle in front of his middle school in unincorporated Byron Monday morning, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The boy, a Discovery Bay resident, was reported struck at 7:48 a.m. on Byron Highway near Hoffman Lane, near Excelsior Middle School, CHP Officer John Fransen said.

A mother in a black GMC Yukon dropped off her children at the middle school, located at 14301 Byron Highway, and drove away from the school when she hit something, Fransen said. She pulled over and realized she had struck the boy on his bicycle.

The boy was wearing a helmet but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver is cooperating with authorities and the case appears to be a tragic accident, Fransen said. The boy's parents had arrived at the scene as of 9:30 a.m., Fransen said.

Byron Highway was shut down in both directions and was expected to reopen later Monday morning, Fransen said.
