Chevron Holding Community Meeting Tonight on Fire

Chevron is hosting a "Town Hall" meeting in Richmond tonight, Tuesday, in the wake of last night's large, plume-spewing fire at the refinery that prompted a shelter-in-place warning and caused hundreds to go to local hospitals.

The Chevron refinery will hold a community meeting at 6 p.m. in Richmond tonight, Tuesday, following last night's big fire at Chevron refinery.

The 6:30 p.m. fire in a crude unit sent up a large plume visible from many parts of the Bay Area, prompted county health officials to issue a shelter-in-place warning, caused hundreds of people to go to local hospitals with breathing problems, stopped BART service between North Berkeley and Richmond and took 80 firefighters to control.

A notice from Chevron said:

We want to invite the community to come to a Town Hall Meeting to receive information and ask questions. The meeting will be held at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium on Tuesday, August 7 at 6:00 p.m. located at 403 Civic Center Plaza, Richmond, CA.

A later notice from the company added:

During the meeting, additional information on the refinery incident will be provided. Community residents will be invited to ask questions and share concerns.

The following representatives from Chevron, as well as local authorities, will be in attendance:

  • Nigel Hearne, Refinery General Manager, Chevron
  • Randy Sawyer, Contra Costa Director of Hazardous Materials

“Tort Reform” is a Republican Party initiative which will effectively limit the amount of monetary damages a corporation is liable- in case of negligent injury or death. They cleverly mask it as a way to stop “frivolous lawsuits” like the ever famous, “McDonald’s hot coffee spill.” Under a Republican administration- Your’ family is wiped out by a cloud of toxic smoke but the Republican legislature steps in and limits the corporations’ responsibility while they hang you out to dry with insane medical bills. This agenda would truly affect people who are victimized by the Chervon catastrophe taking place now! Think twice before you align yourself with Romney, Palin and Bachman- wolves in sheep clothing.
