Car Fire Sparks Vegetation Blaze Along Hwy 4 Monday Afternoon

Firefighters battled a blaze that spread from a vehicle experiencing mechanical troubles to nearby vegetation on westbound state Highway 4 in Contra Costa County this afternoon, fire officials said.

At about 3 p.m., firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire on westbound state Highway 4 near Cummings Skyway and just east of Franklin Canyon Golf Course, Contra Costa County fire officials said.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a vehicle on fire with flames spreading to the nearby vegetation.

Firefighters quickly contained both the vehicle and vegetation fires, according to fire officials.

The vehicle had been experiencing mechanical trouble prior to the fire and was deemed a total loss, fire officials said.

The fire burned about a quarter acre of grass and brush. The California Highway Patrol assisted with traffic control and ensured the safety of the fire crews operating on the highway.

A westbound lane of traffic was closed for about an hour, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported and the fire remains under investigation.
