Bomb Scare At Martinez Unified School District Office

Package found at Susana Street office -- found to be a firework.

Susana Street was closed this morning while police responded to a report of a suspicious package left at the rear door of the Martinez Unified School District office.

A district employee discovered the package, which police describe as a mortar wrapped in tape with a fuse protruding from the top.

The area was secured and Susana Street blocked off between Court and Estudillo streets. Students at Martinez Jr. High were kept away from the north side of campus while police conducted a search, but no other packages were found.

The Walnut Creek bomb squad, which serves all of the county, were called in and the package was disarmed.

“This kind of motar is used to shoot fireworks into the air,” according to a release from Martinez police. “The mortar was filled with black powder and would have discharged if the fuse had worked. However, the strength of the mortar was minimal and most likely would not have caused injury or damage.”
