Blood Drive Friday In Honor of Sgt. Brian Carter

It is the first annual drive in Sgt. Carter's name.

The Martinez Police Department and the Martinez Police Officers Association will be holding a blood drive Friday in honor of Sgt. Brian
Carter, who died of cancer in June.

Carter, a 37-year-old father of two, had worked at the Martinez
Police Department since 2000.

He was diagnosed two years ago with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, an
aggressive form of cancer involving the cells of the immune system, according to police.

While he fought the cancer, Carter received numerous blood and platelet transfusions to help with a stem cell transplant and later to help prolong his life.

He died June 22 after seeing his two sons one last time, police said.

The Sgt. Brian Carter Memorial Blood Drive is expected to be the first of yearly blood drives in Carter's honor.

It will be held in the Martinez City Council chambers at 525 Henrietta St. in Martinez from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
