Benicia Man Shoots Himself During Eviction, Dies in Hospital

By Bay City News Service

A 59-year-old Benicia man shot himself this morning during an eviction process and later died at a hospital, a police lieutenant said.

Three Solano County Sheriff's deputies tried to evict the homeowner from his residence in the 1400 block of George Court in west Benicia around 10:25 a.m., Benicia police Lt. Frank Hartig said.

The deputies explained the eviction process when they contacted the man at the front door, Hartig said.

The man then told the deputies he had to attend to one of his pets inside and closed the front door, Hartig said. The deputies were standing on the front porch when they heard an indiscernible noise they thought came from the garage of the residence, Hartig said.

The deputies knocked on the unlocked door and went inside when they received no response, Hartig said. They found the man with a self-inflicted gunshot wound in the living room, and called Benicia Fire Department paramedics and police, Hartig said.

The man was taken to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center where he died, Hartig said.

The names of the deputies are not being released, Hartig and Solano County sheriff's Deputy Daryl Snedeker said.
