2 Workers Burned in Acid Spill at Refinery in Martinez

—Bay City News

Two workers at the Tesoro refinery in Martinez are recovering at a hospital today after being burned in an acid spill early this morning, fire officials said today.

The workers were splashed with sulfuric acid around 2:40 a.m. at the refinery, located at 150 Solano Way, where they were treated before being airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Contra Costa County Fire Protection District Capt. Robert Marshall said. He said he did not know the extent of their injuries.

According to a statement from Tesoro spokeswoman Megan Arredondo, the employees were injured while working in one of the refinery's gasoline production units. That unit has been shut down, and outside agencies including Contra Costa Health Services and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District have been notified of the incident, Arredondo said.

The circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.
