Loaves and Fishes proposed site

I have recently learned that Loaves and Fishes is interested in relocating to the Odd-fellows Hall in downtown Martinez close to the Senior Center.  I believe this is a very bad idea.

I understand this is a wonderful organization and feeding the homeless and poor is both right and necessary, but the location of this service should not be downtown and especially not by the senior center.  In my opinion, operating this service close to a senior center would be likened to operating close to an elementary school.

Both seniors and children often feel vulnerable and frightened by the homeless.  I feel very uncomfortable when I'm approached by people asking for money or acting strangely because I know that many people on the streets are mentally unstable.  I am no snob and understand people can lose their jobs and have to struggle to survive, but there are also people who are indigent due to mental illness or drug and alcohol addiction.  Luckily I have never had a dangerous encounter with anyone downtown, but I have been frightened and have crossed the street to avoid confrontations.

If this organization opens downtown, I will feel very uncomfortable and less likely to go to the Senior Center and downtown Martinez in general, as will my friends.  Please ask Loaves and Fishes to locate to an area that will serve the needs of their clients without causing distress to others.
