Community Corner

An Issue for Martinez Senior Citizens

Martinez is a community that does not have a full service senior residence and the Martinez Senior Center is the only resource that provides events, luncheons, senior services and trips for Martinez seniors.
Recently, an affordable residence complex was proposed for Martinez that would be available only to seniors. Now that construction is in the final stages of completion it seems that it is now destined to be assisted living (section 8).
Currently, Loaves and Fishes is seeking a "permanent" site in downtown Martinez for dining serve to the needy. The site they are considering is the old union hall at the corner of Green Street across from the Senior Citizens Club and two doors from the Copper Kettle restaurant. They maintain that even though street parking is very limited it they won't be an issue for the senior center parking lot. Loaves and Fishes also maintains the need for an on-site security guard but hasn't considered that the senior center across the street will also need to have the same security for their parking lot as well as the senior center itself. The senior center also serves CC Cafe lunches at the same time Loaves and Fishes serves their lunches.
It is a given that the community needs Loaves and Fishes as it is a vital service for the needy. The question becomes, "Is there not a better more suitable location for their operation?". Perhaps closer to the west end of Marina Vista where there is housing for those they serve. I would also hope that it isn't true that there are financial interests involving real estate transactions for some of the city's elected officials - invites conflicts of interest.
