Martinez Police Officer Succumbs to Illness

11-year veteran of the force Brian Carter leaves behind family and friends.

After a two year battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, Martinez Police Sgt. Brian Carter died on Wednesday at a local hospital.

The 37-year-old father and husband began his career in Martinez in 1996 as a reserve officer. After a two-year stint as an officer in Benicia, Carter returned to Martinez in 2000.

"His greatest passions included firearms training and safety," said Martinez Police Chief Gary Peterson. "He was a respected SWAT Team Leader as well as department range master. Brian made the difficult jobs of police officer and sergeant look easy, and as the Chief of Police, I am proud to have had Brian in our police family."
