In Case You Missed It: Steve Weir Retires

The long-time Contra Costa County clerk stepped down last week and was replaced by another familiar name.

Last month, Patch profiled Steve Weir, one of the most active politicians in Contra Costa County the past four decades.

Weir, one of the East Bay's first openly gay elected officials, oversaw Contra Costa's elections since becoming county clerk in 1989. Before that, the Pleasant Hill native was a Concord councilman and a member of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission and the Contra Costa Water District board.

On Monday, his replacement as county clerk, former state Assemblyman Joe Canciamilla of Pittsburg, was sworn in.
