Still Time To Sign Up For Relay For Life

This year's event is July 28 and 29 at Las Juntas Elementary School.

Relay for Life is an annual overnight event in which teams of people camp out in the center of the track, and take turns walking around the track in relay fashion for 24 hours, all for the purpose of raising money to fight cancer, to remember those who have been lost to the disease, and those who have survived.

The event opens with a Survivors Lap, to acknowledge those who have come through the fight, and to show appreciation for the caregivers who have given their time and energy in the effort as well.

Throughout the event, live entertainment keeps the energy level high, and food and activities keep the spirits up.

At night, candles are lit in paper bags bearing the names of those touched by and lost to cancer. This is the Luminaria, and walkers often take these laps in silence as they remember loved ones and friends.

At the end of the event, participants take a personal committment to do something to help fight cancer - whether it's vowing to quit smoking, or working with local officials, or getting screened for cancer.
