Welcome to Morning Briefing

It's Summer Solstice, and the living is easy, though some things will be delayed.

Welcome to Morning Briefing. It's TUESDAY, June 21, 2011.

It's Summer Solstice, or the first official day of summer, and the heat should be enough proof for you that summer has truly arrived. It is a Spare the Air Day, so if you don't have to drive, or operate any gas-powered device, please don't. Today is the longest day of the year, and the shortest night, so make of that what you will. Meanwhile, our fair city continues to suffer delays in its assets, as it were. Tonight, should you attend the Park, Recreation, Marina and Cultural Commission meeting, you will hear from city staff about delays in opening the new library and (sadly) the new municipal swimming pool. Neither will be open in July, as it turns out. A back-ordered elevator has stalled the library project, and unseasonal rains are responsible for the delays to the pool opening. These are disappointing situations, to be sure -- both of those facilites are high-use during the summer, especially the pool. It looks as though the new pool is going to be worth the wait, however. Will the cost be prohibitive, though? At $5 for adults, $4 for those 55 and older, and $2.75 for kids 3-17, the fees are significantly higher than the old pool fees. Sure, it's a nicer pool, and people will eventually get used to the higher cost, but those first few days when people get to the gate and find out how much more expensive it is to swim are going to be furious.

Oh, one more thing - the winners of this weekend's King of the County BBQ, as promised:
