Spring is for Blooming, Beavers and Beer

Also, a hopeful happy hour and a half, West of Next, and wildflowers galore.

It's FRIDAY, April 22, 2011. The beavers are rebuilding on the site of their washed-out dam again, and Jim Blair is rebuilidng right next door, on the site of what was Bertola's. His new digs is called Creek Monkey Tap House, after the legendary creature that (never) haunted Alhambra Creek. Jim is a local attorney and a great guy who is going to bring a lot of energy and knowledge to his new endeavor. I am definintely looking forward to the day the doors open on this new establishment, hopefully sometime this summer. It promises to be a summer of hope for our city; aside from Creek Monkey, the city's new Aquatic Center is slated to open in July, and with any luck, at least one of the two new sports centers in the old warehouses at the end of Ferry Street will also begin operation. Things are moving forward in our town. It feels good.

  1. "" is the rather ambitious title of the new show at opens today at the mARTinez Gallery. These shows are always worth paying attention to - the city has a wealth of artistic talent that is coming together as a community.
  2. Today's Happy Hour and a Half is brought to you by , who this afternoon presents some of the Hopeful Romantics - Danny White and Hope Savage - beginning at 4:30 p.m. and ending at 6 p.m. No cover, lots of fun.
  3. After the Happy Hour and a Half, will perform at the same venue. A show you certainly don't want to miss.
  4. Today and tomorrow are the last performances of "" at the high school. If you haven't gone yet, just remember: .
  5. You have two chances to take in the wildflower extravaganza now in full bloom on Mt. Wanda - tonight at 6 p.m., you can meet members of the Alhambra Hills Open Space Committee at the end of Canyon Way for a hike led by, or you can meet National Park rangers at the corner of Alhambra Avenue and Franklin Canyon Road tomorrow at 9 a.m. for a. Either way, make a point of seeing Mt. Wanda in the spring this year. She puts on quite a show.
