Really Bad Song for a Friday

Also photo essays in green, crab feeds, more corned beef, and culture for the price of a library card.

It's FRIDAY, March 18, 2011. We hope you had a splendid St. Patrick's Day, and that you're feeling spry and chipper this fine day after. In case you're worried about a "nuclear cloud" floating over here from Japan, don't. By all accounts, if it gets here at all, it will be relatively harmless. What could cause some harm is taking potassium iodine tablets absent a nuclear event. What also can be harmful are certain kinds of music, as this tune, which has had nearly 15 million hits on YouTube. I'm all for young people enjoying their peers singing, but really: "Gotta have my bowl, gotta have my cereal"? There is something to be said for lyrical integrity. And that kid in the video driving the car? No way is he old enough to drive. Weird. Anyway, we share it because it's called "Friday." And it is.

  1. Did you happen to catch Nicole diGiorgio's photo essay "It's Not East Being Green" yesterday on ? If you didn't, you should now. It's quite a remarkable collection of all things green, with many surprises.
  2. This seems like a good time to remind our readers about the Contra Costa County Library's Discover and Go program. You use your library card to make a reservation and get in free at a large number of Bay Area cultural attractions such as museums, galleries and cultural institutions.
  3. Make your reservation today for Tuesday's kindergarten transition workshop hosted by the Martinez Unified School District in collaboration with the County Office of Education. During this interactive workshop, Kindergarten - Ready or Not Here We Come, participants will focus on a smooth transition and successful experience in kindergarten. Parents will receive a colorful calendar with activities to prepare for kindergarten. Additionally, participants will be given a hot-off-the-press interactive kindergarten seasonal guide, Road Map to Kindergarten. The calendar and guide are a $15 value. A light dinner (salad, bread and treat) will be served. Call today and register for this exciting workshop — 925-228-3276, ext 0, refer to section number 07-5620. The class fee is $7. Space is limited.
  4. If you didn't get enough yesterday, you can have more Saturday at Grace Episcopal Church, 130 Muir Station Road, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
  5. And if you've had more than enough corned beef, thank you very much, then head over to the Martinez Yacht Club instead and help the Martinez Police Officers Association raise money at its crab feed fund raiser.

Have a wonderful weekend, and don't forget to log on to Martinez Patch. Our conversation continues on Saturday and Sunday.
