Pi Day and Marina Update

Also blues jam, school board bonds, whiz kid request and did you check your smoke alarm?

It's MONDAY, March 14, 2011. You all remembered to turn your clocks forward an hour, right? Hopefully, you also changed the batteries in your smoke alarms. The value of being prepared couldn't be more starkly illustrated right now than in Japan, as a nation struggles mightily to survive unprecedented and unexpected challenges. Doing little things now, like putting together an earthquake preparedness kit, can help ease the problems caused later on by, say, earthquakes.

  1. It's Pi Day (3.14). Have a piece of pie to celebrate. Because, as one of the characters in the film Pulp Fiction so rightfully points out, "every day's a good day for pie." Around my house, where lives a math teacher and a math whiz kid, I'm sure the discussion around the breakfast table will be even more unfathomable than usual.
  2. Speaking of Whiz Kids, don't forget to send in your nominations for your , our every-Wednesday feature. Just tell us the name, age, school, and reasons for the kid's awesomeness. Oh, and a photo or two. We run the story each Wednesday at noon.
  3. The meets tonight and will discuss, among other things, releasing $25 million out of $45 million in bonds approved by voters in November for installation of solar panels, build out of the Performing Arts Building at Alhambra High School, and new classrooms for technical education programs.
  4. Another meeting tonight will be those who play and listen to the blues. It's the at Armando's, sponsored by the Good Stuff Guitar Shop. Showtime starts at 7 p.m., and entry fee is a mere $3.
  5. Finally, if you've got nothing else to do for lunch today, consider taking in the City Council Marina Subcommittee meeting in the Board Room, second floor, at noon. Mayor Rob Schroder and Councilmember Mark Ross will hear from staff about the latest information regarding the proposed $3 million loan from the state Department of Boating and Waterways for the repair and restoration of the Marina. City Hall is at 525 Henrietta St.
