Pets of the Week

Meet Rex and Tiggles

Rex is a black lop-eared male rabbit. He is very relaxed and easy going. His fur is black with white frosted tips, and it's silky soft. Rex likes to have some time to really get to know you before he starts turning on the charm. He likes being petted and would be a great companion to an older child or adult. He will need to be neutered. (A687600)

Tiggles is a tan and white short-haired male rabbit. He is energetic and will enjoy time for lots of exercise and play. He has a curious streak and likes to hop around and explore. Tiggles is fun to watch as he is very cute and has an expressive face. Tiggles is recommended for someone who already has rabbit experience. He will need to be neutered. (A686520)

Having a pet rabbit is a long term commitment and as pets they are best suited for older children and adults. They are not recommended as pets for young children. Rabbits require some daily exercise and play, a cozy and clean place to live, healthy food and clean water, plus they need time to connect with their family, and of course they need a lot of love. The rabbits available for adoption at the Contra Costa Animal Shelter are all indoor rabbits. Indoor rabbits are happier, live longer, and bond better with their owners.

Rabbits can get bored, just like any pet. When their owners are away, they need some toys to keep them entertained, such as cardboard boxes, toilet paper rolls, apple branches... Rabbits are intelligent animals who can be litter boxed trained. Not all rabbits like to be held, but both Rex and Tiggles like being petted. Once a rabbit feels comfortable with you he will open up and show his complex personality.

Contra Costa Animal Services offers a variety of information resources about caring for indoor rabbits.
