Lots of Weekend Fun In Spite of All the Rain

Growing tomatoes, seeing 'Alice in Wonderland,' rescuing rabbits, and more.

Today is FRIDAY, March 25, 2011. There is more rain in store for today, though hopefully not in the quantities we were treated to yesterday. The drought for this year has been declared officially over by water officials. It was interesting to see Alhambra Creek get near its capacity again — it's been a while since that has happened. This weekend, despite the possibility of more precipitation, holds a lot of events, so let's get down to it:

  1. In terms of music, you couldn't do better. is featuring serious blues with Kickin' The Mule on Friday, R&B on Saturday with Old Skool, and a benefit show Sunday for a rabbit rescue group with Rocking Horse, Felsen and Goldenheart. Friday and Saturday shows begin at 8 p.m., the Sunday show at 3 p.m.
  2. This Friday, and next Thursday and Friday, treat yourself and the family to very cool musical Alice in Wonderland. There will be a story later today about this production, but having seen it last night, let me just say that this is a great musical romp. These kids worked hard, and it shows. Showtime is 7 p.m.
  3. Does it seem like every year, at least one person you know shows up with a bag full of tomatoes from their garden? This year, if you want to be that person, take a class from on Saturday. It's free and you're just ripe for this kind of information.
  4. Don't forget that Saturday is  at 333 Ferry St. That's the old Waters Warehouse, or, if you go back even further in Martinez history, the old cannery building. This is always a great event, full of fun and color.
  5. Finally, spring cleaning is in the air. When you come across old cell phones, computer monitors and televisions, you can recycle them Saturday and Sunday at Alhambra High School at the Interact Club's . Funds go to national and international causes, so you can't lose.
