Let There Be Lights

New holiday lights are being installed this week on Main Street in a joint project by Main Street Martinez and the Martinez Shell Refinery.

Shell Martinez Refinery workers have been busy all week installing new holiday lights along lights poles on Main Street. Shell is collaborating with Main Street Martinez to install the lights, and splitting the $16,000 cost.

The lights will replace the ones that were installed several years ago in the trees along Main Street. Those lights were broken as the trees grew and changed shape, and some of the lights were vandalized.

The new LED lights are very efficient, said a Shell spokesman Monday, and will use very little power. They will be up all year to lend a festive atmosphere to Main Street.

Hate to be a Scrooge...but if the City is so broke...where is the$8,000 coming from for their share ??? That could feed and help a whole lot of people and help save a whole lot of animals, too !

Business slows way down in the winter on Main Street. I think the lights will help. I also think more retractable awnings would help bring people out more in the winter and night time hours. We have more night life now and need more. This will all generate more money than the $8,000 MSM put out to install the lights.
Also I believe all the work was done by volunteers. If the money did come from the city, then I think it was money well spent.

The business community in downtown needs help. There are many downtown places that donate food, clothing, and help shelter our poor. We also organize events that help under-privileged local people. We are strong supporters of our MUSD! Your downtown community is there for you, are you there for them? Remember if we go away, so does the causes and events that we do to help our wonderful little town. When shopping this year remember us, and yes the lights are beautiful and thank you for keeping it Merry & Bright! Santa and the Snow Park are on their way!

Thank you again to shell oil for keeping Christmas all year long. No need to go to neighboring towns to feel festive. Now if the vendors could jazz up their front windows, we could have a perfect main street.

Paint the railroad trestle that crosses Alhambra. It's an eyesore.

I agree, but the money is going to other places...whatever they are.
