Getting Over the Wednesday Hump

Also, a new Alhambra principal, a new proposal for the Sharkey Building, biking to work, and Bay to Breakers.

Today is WEDNESDAY, May 11, 2011. In the parlance of some, it's "hump day," the day of the week that's right in the middle, where you look back to see how far you've come with Monday's plans and dreams, and look ahead to see how far you have to go before getting to the weekend. That's a lot of qualities for a weekday to have. In the blues tune Stormy Monday, Wednesday is either "worried" or "worse (than Tuesday), dependig on the version you are listening to. Either way, this particular Wednesday promises to be a beautiful spring day. Enjoy it.

  1. How about a great big Martinez "hello" to Nermin Kamel, who was selected Monday night by the Martinez Unified School District board to be the next principal at Alhambra High School. Presently, Kamel is the assistant principal at San Ramon Valley High School. She will take the place of Sue Mircovich, who is retiring after 31 years with the district.
  2. Tomorrow is Bike To Work Day. Why not leave the car in park, the SUV stationary, the truck idle, and Lance Armstrong your way to work if at all possible? Many forms of public transit have room for you and your bike, if you do a little advance planning. With weather like this, what's not to love about being out in it?
  3. Today from noon to 1 p.m., the Economic Development Subcommittee of the City Council (that would be Lara DeLaney and Janet Kennedy) will meet to hear the latest proposal for the Sharkey Building, otherwise known as 630 Court St. This will be the seventh proposal put forth for this particular property. The meeting will take place in the City Manager's office, second floor, 525 Henrietta St., and it will be open to the public.
  4. Don't forget that tomorrow is the Court Street version of the Farmers Market, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. If you run out of fresh fruits and vegetables on hump day, this is your chance to replenish your stash until the Sunday market on Main Street.
  5. And yes, this Sunday is the Bay To Breakers race in San Francisco. It's the 100th anniversary of this particular event, and Patch will be there in a big way, as one of the sponsors of the event. I'll be there in a volunteer capacity, since the idea of me running in the race would be the worst marketing idea ever. Have you ever participated in this event? Tell us about it.
