Five Things - Absent Drum Circles, Mock Trials and Mother Goose

Also DFAL All League shout outs and persons of the year.

Today is TUESDAY, March 1. We begin today the inevitable march toward spring, and ultimately summer. Presidents Day has come and gone, the Academy Awards have been presented once again, and that means sunshine and mild temperatures are right around the corner. The Franklin Hills are deep green, Alhambra Creek is running fast and the sky is a brilliant blue. A few more weeks of crisp weather and then we'll be immersed in the balmy, breezy brilliance of weather for which we pay a much higher cost of living than folks in, say, Iowa. And so many of those days, it's worth it.

  1. The at Nancy Boyd Park is canceled until further notice. It seems that no one was showing up and a silent drum circle is nowhere near as much fun. So until you hear otherwise, please don't go to Nancy Boyd Park for a 6 p.m. Drum Circle on Tuesdays. For now.
  2. Please note: today's High School Mock Trial finals, sponsored by the Contra Costa County Office of Education, is not open to the public. Students from Alhambra High School as well as many other county high schools compete in mock trial. Martinez Patch will cover the last day, but again, this event is not open to the general public.
  3. It's a good day to begin considering whom you will nominate for the 's Man and Woman of the Year, Young Man and Woman of the Year, Educator of the Year, Service without Borders Volunteer and Lifetime Achievement. Send your letters of nomination to Martinez Chamber of Commerce, 603 Marina Vista, Martinez, CA 94553, or e-mail your nominations to reba@martinezchamber.com. The awards will be presented at the annual ceremony April 30, at the Martinez Events Center. Keep your eye on Martinez Patch for more details and information.
  4. It's also a good day to give a shout out to some very prestigious students at  who made the DFAL All-League 2010-2011: First Team:
Serena Dechristofaro (senior) and Natalie Smith (junior); Second Team: Anne Whipple (junior) and Julia Wilkins (freshman); Honorable Mention: Gabby Vinco (freshman), Brittani Pyegeorge (junior) and Jewelz Andrews (senior). Congratulations, ladies!
  5. Finally, it's at the Martinez Library, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. It's a delightful way to share tales of wonder and whimsy with your little one, and get them prepared to attend City Council meetings one day.
